The barque S. F. Hersey, which cleared at the Custom-house on Friday, has on board a large quantity of material for the Northern Territory railway, consisting of wheelbarrows, ballast wagons, timber, 1,157 pkgs. bridgework, and several pkgs. of bolts, &c. Another large and somewhat novel item in the clearance is a " line" of thirty-eight donkeys. These animals, as stated in our reporter's interview with Mr. Millar, were purchased by the firm from the Beltana Station to be employed on the railway works, as they stand the climate better than horses. On their way to the vessel they attracted considerable attention. |

The " S. F. Hersey " had a very narrow escape from what might have been a serious accident, on Tuesday last. A locomotive boiler was being landed, and had been hoisted high enough by the ships tackles, when it was found that the donkey engine on the pier was not strong enough to take charge of it. While hanging in the slings a strop carried away, and it had to-be lowered back on deck very hurriedly. Fortunately this was managed without any worse accident than carrying away the funnel of the ship's donkey. |
